Semi-finals of tourism awards postponed as a mark of respect

The semi-finals of the DMB Tourism Awards for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole have been postponed as a mark of respect to The Queen.

The event was due to take place at Hoburne Park Christchurch on September 13.

In a joint statement, Craig Mathie, Chair of the Destination Management Board, and David Bailey, Chair of the Judges, said: “It is with very great sadness that we received the news of Her Majesty The Queen passing away on Thursday September 8.

“As a mark of respect, and after much consideration, we have taken the decision to postpone the semi-finalist event planned for Tuesday, September 13.

“The event was planned as a celebration of tourism and during a period of national mourning we do not think it would be appropriate for it to go ahead in its intended format.

“Rather than try and completely change the format at such short notice, which would undermine the celebratory reason to hold the event, we believe that the right decision is to postpone until after the period of official mourning and the funeral of Her Majesty has taken place.

“We can confirm the new date for the DMB Tourism Awards 2022 Semi Finals will be Thursday September 29 at Hoburne Park Christchurch from 7pm.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Tim Seward, who is organising the Tourism Awards events on behalf of the Board, for all his hard work and commitment to the awards.

“We appreciate that this postponement is not ideal from an organisational point of view but this is an unprecedented situation.”

Wimborne BID backs #BusinessSOS campaign

A new campaign – #BusinessSOS – has won the support of Wimborne Business Improvement District (BID).

It’s been founded by organisations representing more than 150,000 retail, leisure, hospitality and tourism businesses.

They warn that the harm caused by the spiralling energy crisis is superseding the pandemic with the potential to cause irreversible damage to UK high streets and the economy.

The campaign believes mass closures and redundancies are inevitable if the government does not swiftly implement measures that alleviate the critical pressures that businesses, like households, have been facing since April.

The #BusinessSOS three-point plan to support ailing businesses is:

Fiona Harwood, pictured left, Chair of Wimborne BID, said: “Our businesses have been through so much in the last few years, and there’s nowhere left for them to turn.

“Without immediate government support we will see many viable businesses closing their doors.

“This is why Wimborne BID is supporting the Business SOS campaign on behalf of our businesses.”

#BusinessSOS was founded by Croydon Business Improvement District and Bart & Taylor with the support of:

Collectively they represent over 150,000 retail, leisure, hospitality and tourism businesses.
