Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says a possible suspension of the local sales tax on gasoline will be considered.

New York lawmakers have approved suspending the state gas tax for six months starting June 1. The legislation gives counties the option of temporarily dropping their local gas tax or capping the tax at a certain amount.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Thursday, Garnar said suspending or adjusting the Broome County tax on gasoline is "certainly something that we're open to." He said the county is trying "to figure out the mechanism for actually doing that."

The counties on Long Island have moved to cap their local sales tax on gasoline. No sales tax will be charged on any part of the gas price above $3.

The county executive said there are "a couple of ways we could do it." He said his administration will discuss the possibility of passing a local law providing a temporary tax break.

Garnar said he wants to make sure "that the savings get passed on at the pump." He said that if the county takes action county residents should "actually save money."
