While Ellie’s gameplay is different, she’s just as curious as Joel and can find many interesting artifacts in The Last of Us Part 1.

Originally released as DLC for the original game, Left Behind is now a separate chapter included in The Last of Us Part 1. The story focuses on Ellie during two periods of her life: surviving alone after Joel is wounded at the University of Eastern Colorado and flashbacks to life in the Boston Q.Z. and the events leading up to the discovery of her immunity.

Players will have a brief chance to play as Ellie during the Lakeside Resort chapter of the main game, but Left Behind expands on her gameplay. Using her size to her advantage, Ellie is nimble and quiet, making stealth an optimal choice when entering combat scenarios. While players will have access to her switchblade for melee, it’s not like playing as Joel, who can hold his own in a fistfight. Human enemies can push Ellie away and grab her if players attempt to approach them directly, and although she can’t get infected, it doesn’t mean that the Infected can’t tear her apart.

Ellie has been learning from Joel over the course of their journey together, so searching for supplies and crafting familiar items that were at the player's disposal while controlling Joel comes as no surprise. She is also, however, naturally curious, and there are ample opportunities for players to collect a new set of notes during this side story. Here is where players can find the artifacts in Left Behind.

At the start of Left Behind, Ellie will have a few things in her backpack that can be inspected. Players will recognize them from the Lakeside Resort chapter from the main game, and a few of them are given background as players progress through the story. For example, the joke book No Pun Intended: Volume Too is given to Ellie as a gift.

In the mall, players need to duck under the shutter for Weston’s Pharmacy and head over to the right, where the red counter is. On the ground behind the counter will be the first note next to a couple of cardboard boxes. This note has the combination for the lock on the store called American Princess.

After heading into American Princess, players can head to the very back of the store to find the pharmacist covered in fungus and stuck to a wall. Players will need to search his coat for the key, and next to him will be a set of photos taken in a photo booth with a note on the back.

Before reaching the end of the chapter, players will need to navigate through a ruined section of the mall through the Pixitek camera store, which will lead to an old salon. In here will be the remains of a body with a note not too far from their feet. Additionally, players can pick up a free med kit from them.

After Riley convinces Ellie to spend time with her, she will lead the player through an apartment and past a wall that says, “Rise up! Fight FEDRA”. To the left will be a half-boarded door that players can duck under, and instead of following Riley to the left, go straight until reaching a table at the other end of the room to find Marlene’s wanted poster.

After the brick-throwing contest, Riley will lead players down a set of stairs to get to the mall basement. Before progressing, players should head into a room on the left. Inside will be the remains of a canteen, and players can head over to the coffee machine on the opposite side to find this note on the counter.

While back in the present day with Ellie, players will need to keep an eye out for the series of fast food counters in front and continue up the path here. There will be a gurney at the far end with a note on the ground in front of it.

In the flooded loading docks, players will need to turn on a generator to bring back the power. Next to the generator will be a notepad for players to collect.

Once players have opened the locked gate leading to the next floor of the mall, head up the stationary escalator and take a left when at the top. There will be a small camp here and a recorder on the ground left by the previous occupant.

When Ellie reaches the helicopter, this artifact will be automatically added to her inventory.

After Ellie and Riley bring power back to the mall, they will be able to ride the carousel together. Behind a counter next to the carousel will be a note written by Winston about Ellie.

In the present, after Ellie leaves the helicopter, players will need to proceed further into the mall, but before doing so, head into the open doorway on the right with the sign for Colorado Savings & Loan outside. Follow the path round until finding a body where the crew photo can be collected.

Players need to head into an air duct where they can follow a blood trail to find another body that has the recorder with them. It will then be possible to find the other end of the duct, which leads to the sports store where players will be cornered by both human and Infected enemies. Using a brick or bottle, players can attract the Infected using sound causing the two sides to fight among themselves. Doing so will grant players the trophy, “Live Bait.”

Across both Left Behind and The Last of Us Part 1, there are 99 artifacts and notes to be found. Players will be awarded the trophy “Chronicles” for collecting them all, bringing them closer to the platinum.

The Last of Us Part I is available on PlayStation 5. A PC version is in development.
